In her active life, she was a visionary with the intelligence and talent to make ideas become reality. Gladys Spellman was a trailblazer for the women of our state and nation. Throughout her years of service to the people of the State of Maryland, Gladys Spellman's efforts resulted in major reforms in the areas of county employment housing policy social, economic and human resource planning consumer protection sexual assault women's pension rights mandatory retirement and discrimination against disabled persons. Her seat was not declared empty until 1981. ![]() But even while she lay in critical condition, Representative Spellman was elected for a forth term in Congress. In 1980, Spellman suffered from a cardiac arrest which left her in a semi-comatose state and eventually led to her death in 1988. Representative Spellman was instrumental in sponsoring legislation to prevent discrimination based on marital status and prohibit discrimination against the handicapped and the elderly. In 1974, Spellman was elected to the U.S. In 1972 she was awarded the highest honor that could be bestowed by county officials nationwide when she became the first woman elected president of the National Association of Counties. She later served as chairperson of that body, and as a member of the Prince George's County Council. In 1962, she became the first woman elected to the Board of Commissioners of Prince George's County. Now I can stand at the gates of justice to to encourage others.”Īlsobrooks looked across the room and told the women, “Your service is our strength, both extraordinary and ordinary.Your everyday actions make our community stronger.Throughout her career as a public servant, Gladys Noon Spellman successfully spearheaded many efforts to effect social and political reform in all facets of life for her native Prince George's County, for the State of Maryland, and for the nation.īefore being elected to public office, Gladys Spellman was an educator in the Prince George's County public school system, president of the Prince George's County Council of PTA's, as well as chairwoman of the National Mental Health Study Center. “They lived in the attic of someone’s home in Fairmont Heights until they could live on their own. ![]() “My parents moved to Prince George’s County after my great-grandfather was murdered in act of racial violence in Seneca, S.C. Prince George’s County States Attorney Angela Alsobrooks (D), the keynote speaker for the event, said, “I had to fight back tears several times,” after she delivered the address as the first female ever elected to a county wide office. Two high school seniors, Brianna Campbell of Suitland High School and Navasha Noble of Central High School, were the scholarship award winners. ![]() Joyce Beck, in the Community Services Division of the Prince George’s County Police Department, received the 2011 Spellman award from a field of nearly two dozen women nominated for the honor. “The sacrifice that you made and others have made to make this country and this county great.” ![]() Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker (D) told the gathering that the county government is filled with women who have made a difference, just as Spellman did when she was elected to the U.S. Brandi Smith, Principal I proudly welcome you to Gladys Noon Spellman Elementary School for SY 2022-2023.
